Broncos NFL Draft Football

Fortune favors the bold. I’m glad the Broncos took a swing on Oregon quarterback Bo Nix with the 12th pick in the first round. I hope coach Sean Payton can mold Nix into a dude.

Kiz: Bold move? Or a desperate reach? We’ll go with your term and acknowledge that Payton tying his reputation to Nix is the boldest draft day move by the Broncos since 2010, when Josh McDaniels decided Tim Tebow merited a first-round choice. Being the ever-lovin’ optimistic fools we are here at Kickin’ It Headquarters, we are willing to confidently declare Nix can dink and dunk his way down the field in a way Tebow never could. When we look at Nix, we see Andy Dalton. Is that a good thing? You tell me.

Not sure Nix is better than either Wilson (Russell or Zach). This management team at Broncos headquarters is flailing.

Kiz: As you might already know, Pittsburgh and Denver are scheduled to play this season. Which team has the better quarterback room? The Steelers have DangeRuss and Justin Fields. The Broncos counter with Nix, Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson. I’m afraid the starting QB in Denver might be third string in Pittsburgh.

I love the Nix pick. It’s clear this was the quarterback that Payton wanted all along. Nix is mature, smart, a quick decision-maker, super accurate, gets rid of the ball on time and mobile. He has all the traits that will help him thrive in Payton’s offense. Love it.

Kiz: How soon will Broncomaniacs demand that Nix is the starting quarterback? In this dusty old cowtown, the real make-or-break trait for a QB isn’t his accuracy or arm strength, but how he deals with the expectations of a fan base spoiled by John Elway and Peyton Manning. Being the quarterback of an NFL franchise is a huge job. And it’s bigger here.

Seems like a desperate first-round pick, but the Broncos are a desperate franchise at this point. I could’ve done without the Patrick Mahomes comparisons by Payton.

-- Steve, not easily impressed

Kiz: I’m so old I can recall that time when Mike Shanahan compared Brian Griese to Joe Montana. But my memory isn’t always great, so can you please remind me: How did that work out? All things considered, maybe a better comp for Nix would be Griese.

I miss Brock Bowers already.

Kiz: The crazy run on quarterbacks, who accounted for half of the first dozen picks in the opening round, allowed Bowers, the acclaimed tight end from Georgia, to fall in the Raiders’ lap at No. 13. OK, in the NFL, you aren’t going anywhere without a quarterback. I get that. Bowers, however, has at least a 3X greater chance of one day going to the Pro Football Hall of Fame than Nix does in his wildest dreams.

And today’s parting shot takes issue my take that Payton can’t afford to be wrong with his projection of Nix as a franchise quarterback.

Kiz, you own the worst take in the history of football.

Z Man, don’t tread on him
