Sean Wylam died Sunday after being caught in a rock slide near the summit of Snowmass Mountain. Wylam was by himself on Sunday’s climb, which wasn’t unusual. He’d hiked with others, but going solo never stopped him from summiting scores of tall peaks, including 20 of the state’s 14,000-foot mountains. Full story ... Snowmass Mountain photo gallery

Mt. Sherman in the Mosquito Range is fairly easy and access to it is good. There are some nice mining ruins there if you like that sort of thing. Humbolt, in the Sangres, is not bad either for a first though a bit longer now due to hiking South Colony Lakes Road. Quandary would be my third choice for a first.

I've written a few articles on this very issue as it is something I'm passionate about. I wrote a fairly in-depth article on mountaineering safety, located here: <a href=http://www.100summits.com/articles/mountaineering-safety.html>Link</a> And I summarized each of the fifteen 2010 deaths on Colorado mountains here: <a href=http://www.100summits.com/articles/colorado-mountaineering-deaths/180-2010-colorado-mountaineering-deaths-a-review-and-remembrance.html>Link</a>
